AU Background: In short, Ganondorf (or Ganon as he prefers to be called, for short) is the reincarnation of the legendary hero from the sky. (the events of Skyward Sword, Minish Cap, etc. leading up to Ocarina of Time proceeded canonically; the hero in this case has always been Ganon, not Link--who is the reincarnation of the demon king.) In this case, a young man going by the name of Link is attempting to turn all of Hyrule into a dark, evil forest. Both Ganon and Zelda were already 17 when these events began, but he still had to retrieve the three spiritual stones and retrieve the titular Ocarina. Instead of Navi the fairy, Ganon can talk to his two surrogate mothers, the witches Kotake and Koume, through a witches' glass (an orb with magical powers) hung at his belt.

Being prince of the Gerudo, Ganon had set out for Hyrule Castle to entreat the King for more suitable land for his people, whose desert existence was harsh to put it lightly. He was turned down as the King of Hyrule refused to deal with a mere boy, and a Gerudo besides. Furious at the slight, Ganon sought to steal a great treasure from the Castle in revenge, but instead was caught by Princess Zelda, peeking in the window in the courtyard. Link, a young man their own age from the forest, was petitioning the King as well, and actually succeeded. Zelda gave Ganon her misgivings about the man claiming to be the Hero of Legend, and entreated Ganon to find the three sacred stones in order to boost her power, so she could determine whether Link were truly the hero or not. In return, she would petition her father on Ganon's behalf. Ganon retrieved the stones and returned to the Castle, only to see Zelda and her attendant, Impa, fleeing from the town. Link had betrayed the King and killed him, then tried to hunt down Zelda. After telling Ganon to go back to his desert, he takes off, not realizing that Zelda had tossed the Ocarina into the moat.

Ganon retrieved the Ocarina, and entered the Temple of Time, where he retrieved the Master Sword--proof that he was the Chosen Hero, not the impostor. But Link had followed him in, and after attacking Ganon, he stole the Ocarina. After failing to take the entire Triforce for himself, he fled into the past so he could change it for his own ends. Thankfully Ganon managed to follow him, but was reduced to a child. After managing to chase Link back to the present, he was able to reclaim the Ocarina and properly wield the Master Sword. Zelda in the meantime had found safety among the Gerudo along with Impa, and was masquerading as a Sheikah. She tells Ganon that Link had managed to change the past enough to cover Hyrule with a massive dark forest, thanks to the stolen Triforce of Power that he holds. Zelda and Ganon began working together, Ganon moving from present to past and back again with the Ocarina and Zelda coordinating the Gerudo forces in the present to stop Link along with Ganon's friend Nabooru, awakening the Sages and purifying the temples of the evil Link has tainted them with.

Personality: Ganon may be a bit proud and vain at times, but he has a strong, indomitable spirit that lends itself greatly to his task. He bears the Triforce of Courage, but living in the desert has already required him to be a courageous individual. The harshness of his environment has tempered him to be able to adapt to many different situations. Like his canon self, he is cunning and stubborn, but unlike the original Ganondorf, his heart hasn't been completely hardened over and turned to evil causes. His temper can be quick and vicious, however, especially if someone threatens the people he's bonded with. He also tends to hold grudges for a long time, for slights imagined or real.

He tends to be flashy in combat and dodging traps, enjoying the adrenaline rush he gets from being acrobatic in his technique. It appeals to his ego, yes, but the fluidity of movement is immensely useful. He's stubborn and headstrong to the point of getting into trouble when trying to engage an enemy directly--which costs him a small fortune in healing potions on his adventure. Ganon also tends to be far too cocky in a fight, biting off more than he can chew with taunts. But in the end, he will never give up until his foe is defeated, something he shares with his canon self. Despite his stab-first-ask-questions-never mentality, he's very quick-thinking, a natural problem solver who has no problem re-rigging traps to catch monsters unaware.

Above all, Ganon is immensely proud of his Gerudo heritage and his people. He is fiercely loyal to them and wants to lead them to new lands where they will be able to prosper and fluorish. The stories of how they came to be shunted to the middle of a gods-forsaken desert are not a lesson in resilience and survival to him--instead, they've given him a sense of entitlement to the fairer, more fertile lands of Hyrule. Thankfully this has lessened the more of Hyrule and her people that he sees and interacts with, but he still tends to be a bit arrogant in the "I've-had-a-harder-time-than-you" department. On the other hand, being taught that stealing what you need to survive is acceptable instead of paying for it has led to some unfortunate misunderstandings in his travels. But the friendships he has forged in both the present and the past have helped him realize that not everyone is selfishly hoarding wealth and resources as he has long believed. He's become more open and accepting of other people than he was at the beginning of his adventure, and more likely to become friendly towards others.

Ganon's upbringing by the Twinrova sisters (nicer than their canon selves, although they still bicker with each other often) has instilled him with a healthy respect for women--especially mothers. Critical in the female-dominated Gerudo society, and has eased his misgivings about Hylians. He has been taught in no uncertain terms that he is meant to protect his people and better their lives as a king, and not rule over them...a callback to the role of the goddess Hylia's chosen hero. He's also learned the importance of being extremely frugal with water...to the point of almost being neurotic about saving as much as possible, and unfortunately making him very paranoid about large bodies of water. After all, what opportunity is there to learn to swim in the desert? Needless to say if it weren't for the Zora tunic, he would probably drown. Being able to breathe underwater doesn't make it any easier to actually be in it, however.

As a survivalist, Ganon will do what he has to for both his people and himself to survive. He's not picky about food or shelter. As long as he has his sword by his side, he knows he is secure--part of the Gerudo belief that a good sword is akin to having an extension of one's own soul. In fact, he used to have two swords, one the Master Sword and one his own Gerudo blade. But Zelda didn't have a sword of her own, and so he lent his Gerudo sword to her so she could help fight against Link's army of monsters. His feelings for the Hylian princess have blossomed over their joint effort to rid the land of evil...a dangerous prospect for certain parties involved.

Overall this Ganon may have his critical flaws, a short temper and a large ego among them, but at heart he is a very determined, courageous individual who is very devoted to his people. He loves to show off while fighting, a fact that doesn't mean his bark is worse than his bite--quite the opposite, in fact. He may not show his feelings on his sleeve (and tends to hide them altogether), but he cares deeply about the people he's met in his travels across Hyrule. Ganon doesn't know much about the other cultures after living a relatively sheltered existence in Gerudo Valley, but he is always respectful and eager to learn. And that may be the one big thing that truly separates him from his canon self.

Abilities: Ganon is part of the Gerudo tribe, so a lot of his fighting is reflective of their quick, agile fighting style. He doesn't use a shield--instead he parries very well with the Master Sword. The sacred sword can't be wielded by evil hands and is legendary for having powers associated with time travel and exorcism. How much of that is true or not, Ganondorf doesn't especially care. It's always by his side and he never lets it out of his sight.

He can also use two magic spells that he's learned from the Twinrova sisters--augmenting the Master Sword with fire or ice as the situation calls for it. He also knows the goddess spells Nayru's Love, which reduces the gravity of the injuries inflicted on him, and Farore's Wind, a mark-and-recall teleportation spell (cast the spell once, cast it again to return to that spot at any time).

He's also an expert at riding on horseback--too bad the Tower doesn't have horses and he can't call his own.
